About Hypertension and High Blood Pressure (HBP)

High blood pressure is a common health condition affecting nearly half of all U.S. adults. Age and race are key risk factors as the rate is even higher among older adults and for Black Americans. Smoking, vaping, a poor diet, having diabetes and being overweight can also indicate higher risk.

With hypertension, the force with which blood is pushed through your body (via your arteries) is too high, so the heart has to work harder in order to pump your blood. Over time, HBP can start to damage organs including the heart, kidneys, brain, and eyes, leaving you prone to things like heart attacks and strokes—even dementia.

Despite available medications, a recent study found that only 40% of U.S. adults taking at least one medicine for their HBP had it under control. This means there remains an unmet need for safe and effective therapies. If you qualify, you could help advance world medicine.
